Picnic time

Wikipedia describes a picnic as:

"In contemporary usage, a picnic can be defined simply as a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors (al fresco or en plein air), ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake or with an interesting view and possibly at a public event such as before an open air theatreperformance, and usually in summer."

Now doesn't that sound perfect?

Just a short walk from our house we have two parks. One with a river running through with a children's playground and lots of grass, an organic farm in walking distance and a watermill. The other with a large duck pond, shady tree areas, and plenty of space for everyone to spread out. The weather has changed and its sunshine all the way this weekend (fingers crossed), so we'll spend Sunday afternoon outside for sure.

So, now's the time to dig out the picnic basket / cooler, a nice big blanket or throw. Make or buy all kinds of tasty treats to nibble on, and relax in the sunshine whilst the kiddos run around until they are exhausted and us Mamas and Papas can stretch out. Or those without children can enjoy being outdoors with good friends, good wine and a good book. Whichever way you picnic, enjoy.

Here are some of my favourite picnic sets found whilst surfing around today. From the traditional wicker basket, to insulated bright colourful collapsible bags, and some lovely blankets to carry along too. I think these will cater for all your picnicing requirements.

I think my favourite pattern has to be this 'Kissing Rabbits' picnic set by Heals - roll-up blanket, cooler bag, cushions, tray.  And the retro style picnic box.  Too cute.

  1. I love the 'kissing rabbits' too. Evokes long lazy afternoons. Unfortunately, picnic season is all but over in Australia - though, to be fair, it's a rare day when you couldn't eat outside if your heart was absolutely set on it. Enjoy your al-fresco season.

  4. One day I will buy a gorgeous picnic set, I WILL!! We go on quite a few picnics, whether the sun is shining or not (up here in Northumberland we can't wait for the sun!!) and I usually end up with various carrier bags instead of a nice retro set. Darn it, I'm going to treat us this season!

  9. Your post made me want to load a wicker basket with apples and homemade bread and a thermos of iced tea (maybe some dark chocolate for dessert), and go for a short picnic on the beach. Thanks for the idea!

  13. This is actually getting a bit spooky. The last one we have in our little retreat on the Isle of Wight. The rabbits I tried to order (as a sleeping bag) but they were sold out and I have an email notification set up of when they're back in stock.

I love picnics - doesn't everyone? We had two this weekend - one at a music festival and one with my sister. It was great. My husband was reminiscing about the cardboard box his parents had as a picnic hamper. When it rained, it got all soggy.
    Happy picnicing!
