s'mores for the weekend

No camping trip is complete without an over-indulgence of s'mores.   I think they are such an American institution, and one my kids (and I) have only ever done on our camping trips here in the US.  They were never part of my camping experiences as a kid in the UK.

Our s'mores supplies are always plentiful.  In fact, when delving into my camping gear cupboard in the garage this week, I found 3 big bags of marshmallows waiting (so really no need for me to have bought another 3 that day!).

For those not so familiar with S'mores or who aren't into a little camping and campfire  Three simple ingredients - marshmallows, chocolate and Graham crackers.  And here is a 'how to do it' guide.

The oozing gooeyness of perfectly toasted marshmallows is always wonderful (with a perfectly browned outer edge). However, trying to get them warm enough to melt the chocolate does create a few burnt to a cinder or falling into the fire casualties along the way!

A little web browsing brings up all kinds of twists on traditional s'mores, so even if you aren't camping with an open fire, you can still try a few new spins on this camping classic whilst in the comfort of you own home.

(I made a version of these for Ruby's birthday last year - a huge success)

Happy Weekending!

  1. These look so good, especially the last ones!! If only if we'd had these at the many Brownie camps I went on, all I can remember of those is baked beans!!

    Happy Week=end :)

    1. Yeah, baked beans and sausages at Brownie camp! They had usually tipped out of the pan at some point and had a few bits of grass and dirt stuck to them! I think we were lucky if we got to toast marshmallows.

  3. Funnily enough I was just reading about S'mores in a magazine last weekend and here they are again. I had never heard of them before but they look so delicious. We must try them!! Thanks for these variations too.

    1. Not sure if you'll get Graham Crackers in the UK. I'd try them with Digestive biscuits (my favourite!) - they may be a little crumbly when squashed together, but would taste soooo good!

    1. Good luck with the camping spot in London! Otherwise a little disposable bbq in your backgarden would be just as much fun.
