screen free for 5 days, and counting

No iPad
No TV
No computer
No Nintendo DS
No whatever else has a screen

That's what my kids have done without for 5 days now.

I expected tears and drama from our 10 year old son, who latest love in Minecraft.  But no!

From my daughter, aged 4, her afternoon movie watching has disappeared (this is also when she usually ends up having a 45 minute nap), so keeping her going on activities and being stimulated has taken some extra work.  She's spent more than a few minutes wandering around a little lost.  But she's getting there.

Screens weren't taken away as a punishment but to get them back to thinking about what they wanted to do, not taking the easty option. Playing, building, drawing, reading, writing (my son has started writing his own mini-books!), building a tent in the garden, playing board games. We threw in an extra playdate, an extra swim, and a park visit.

But both have overall done great, especially my son.

Bedtime routine has become easier.  They are more settled.  My son is less grumpy and actually responds when you say his name the first time (not the 10th!).  Even his best friend from down the street has joined him in the min-book writing activity and neither has asked to play a computer game, not even once.  The only time my son has mentioned its been hard for him without playing his favourite computer game, is when I've told him how well he's down getting on with things.

I haven't resorted to opening wine at a ridiculously early hour of the evening afternoon!

It's not going to be an ongoing thing.  We aren't going 'screenless'.  However, the Huzz and I are thinking of making one week a month, or maybe 3 days a week screenless time.  With the summer warm weather on its way, more outside time will definitely make the option easier.

Let's see how things are when screen time is given back this weekend!  Will the grumpy boy return, will I need to ask the same questions ten times over?  Let's see.

UPDATE - Screens have resumed!  Horrible!  Discussions on how long, when, where etc have all arisen again.  Last week felt such a 'lighter' more relaxed week in the house.  Less raised voices, grumpy faces and discussions.  We are without a doubt implementing a 3 days a week without screen policy here.

iPhone artwork

I spied the book New York - Finger Paintings last week whilst shopping in my very favourite food store New Seasons.

These brilliant 'digital finger paintings' of New York life were created by Jorge Colombo using an iPhone!  Yes, really an iPhone and the application called 'Brushes' (do you know/use it?).  Well, I'm just about getting around the basics on my iPhone, so these pictures impressed me so much.  And as you can see, some of his work has graced the cover of The New Yorker too.

Can't wait for my copy of the book to arrive now.

iLove

It was my birthday last week.  40 what?  Can't quite believe it myself.  Is that really me in the mirror?  Huzz says "looking good honey"!!  He always has the right words for me!  Why do I seem to be attracted to all the ads for eye creams promising to make my tired eyes look like a bright and bushy 16 year old's again, and using more moisturiser than ever before these days!  Well, at least I didn't receive the aforementioned eye (or should I say wrinkle) cream as a gift.  Now that would be a sad pressie don't you think?

Becoming another older had its perks though - Huzz gave me an iPhone.  I'm giddy with excitement about this!  I'm not a huge gadget / technology buyer, but I had kind of mentioned that I didn't like my old phone (if you press it too close to your ear when chatting it cuts out - quite annoying).  Huzz is expecting delivery of his work iPhone soon, and said he didn't want me to get all jealous on him so bought me one in advance of his arriving. Yay!

Now anything from those lovely people at Apple pleases me no end.  I don't think I'd be blogging or creating a family website if I hadn't got my MacBook - there's something about it that makes me want to use it (as opposed to my old PC which gathered dust for weeks on end).

Apple get me everytime with the packaging, just so delightful in itself, well made and so stylish - you just know you have something of great quality inside.  Lovely matt black box with silver Apples.  Pictures of the iPhone icons on the outside.  A couple of white Apple stickers inside (not sure where I'd stick them but who cares?). A little thingy to pop out the SIM card.  Lovely neat plug, charger and earphones (nothing new, but designed so well).  And I love that on all the packaging it states "Designed by Apple in California" - Oh yes I just love that (makes me feel like I have a bit of that sunny Californian lifestyle in my pocket).

So now I am busy trying to discover all the super functions and stuff it can do.  Huzz isn't around much this week to do his usual photographic assignments I request, so you might even see a few tryout iPhone photos popping up instead.

PS - This blog is not sponsored by Apple, I'm just a big fan!
