Yes, the windmill. They aren't everywhere as you may imagine, but we have discovered some beauties on our drives around NL. Some in full working order used for grinding wheat; some with their sails in tatters and barely standing; others being used as homes; and some hundreds of years old in a museum of dutch homes and lifestyles through the ages. They are often enormous, with their sails almost touching the ground from such a huge height. Most impressive.
Whenever we see a windmill, it is always pointed out, and brings a smile and a comment - you can never just drive on past. Here are a few to share today.

ReplyDeleteLovely, The fourth one is my favourite. There is something very peaceful about them like other people have already said. They also make me think of Windy Miller from Camberwick Green. Memories...like the windmills of my mind.

ReplyDeletehow cool to be able to experience these in real life? who gets to say they've stood next to a windmill? they're kind of like very physically significant time machines. one would have to be in awe of their scale, power and history. thanks for reminding us about dutch windmills!
