one year on ...

Today is the last day of school for my two kiddos.  The end of 4th Grade for Luca and the end of pre-school (next Pre-K) for Ruby.  It seems to me that this year has been the fastest school year ever!

Challenges and achievements, fun and friends, laughter and tears.  Its been a full year and the first full US academic year for them both - we relocated to the US a third of the way into last school year.

And now.... 12 weeks of summer vacation!    I shall delight in the not rushed mornings, pool visits, play dates with friends, travel and sunshine.   And yet I'm painfully aware that 12 weeks with my two will no doubt bring a few more grey hairs and moments when we will all need a 'time out'!

Bring on the summer.... I'm (almost) ready!

At the start of school year 2013

At the end!

(and a change in house colour too this year)

bouldering

A wet grey Sunday afternoon, with a 10 yr old boy bursting with energy!

Thank goodness he had a friend's 10th 'bouldering' birthday party to go to.

a little kindness goes a long way

My son brought home from school a list of 'Kind Things' to do this week.

Nothing big, just small gestures -

Pick up some street litter
Help someone with their books
Say a quiet Thank You to a school cafetaria helper
Listen to your teacher the first time (not sure he managed this one!)
Smile at 25 people
Make a new friend
Be helpful at home
Pat someone on the back
Offer a helping hand
etc etc

Luca helped the child sitting next to him at school with her math problem.  As a Thank You, the next day she gave Luca a little box with a clay giraffe she had made, a die within a die (double dice) and a tiny note of thanks.  How lovely is that.  It was so unexpected and he was delighted (he's had a tough week and so this really put a smile on his face).

I think if we all tried a little act of kindness everyday, there would be a lot more smiles and happy hearts in this world (including our own).

Hope you have a lovely weekend.
And don't forget to be a little kind to yourself too!

fun with pocketbooth

I started having some 'retro' style fun with a new App on my iPhone - Pocketbooth.

I remember going into those little photobooths with friends when I was a teenager.  Pulling silly faces.  Laughing.  Wearing funny hats.  Wish I'd still kept them.

Anyhow. I tried out Pocketbooth with the kiddos and Harvey yesterday.  I think we might enjoy this.  And as you can see, making funny faces is still the order of the day!

around here on Instagram

This week has been filled with birthday fun, christmas tree decorating, cake making, movies, puppy love and not enough sleep.  Three out of four of us have colds, and the other one has been on crutches (but that's another story!).  Still lots of laughter and fun stuff going on for the birthday boy.

'Rise of the Guardians' movie afternoon

The Reindeer Christmas decoration that comes out
every year, much to my dislike!

Harvey found Rudolph!

A birthday cake I rustled up and finished just 5 minutes
before Luca arrived home from school!  Phew!

(See here for the Nigella Lawson Buttermilk Birthday cake recipe - it's perfect every time).

Ten balloons for my 10 year old boy.

Dark early morning snuggling on the sofa with new Christmas cushions .
Another 6am wake-up I could do without.

Doughnut selection to finish off that birthday party sugar overload!

My favourite silver and lights tree decorations.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

weekend wishes

I'm so looking forward to the seasonal change upon us.   This week I made the first soup for months, wore an extra layer in the mornings, and got the kiddos Halloween costumes organised.

Next on the list is  ....  pumpkin patch visits and decorating the front porch with a whole collection.  I do love the white ones and I've seen so many great ways to 'pimp your pumpkin' and I can't wait to get started.

We have just a couple of things planned this weekend, the biggest being Luca's 2nd major Judo tournament.  Go get 'em Luca!

Hope you have a relaxed and easy weekend filled with all that you like to do.

weekend scenes

Saturday morning I walked onto the beach to meet the Huzz and kiddos.  Thankfully I had my camera ready as this is the sight I saw within minutes of stepping onto the sand.  We've seen dolphin fins in the sea here before, but seeing this frisky one jumping out was amazing.

Pretty pink hut at the Postcard Inn.

8.30am doughnut breakfast on the beach after an early morning swim.
Great way to start a Sunday morning.

1, 2, 3..... 'Jump'.

Dolphin art display at Pier 60, Clearwater, FLA.

Hope you had a great weekend.

everyday people

Driving with Luca yesterday and this song came onto the radio twice (morning and afternoon). 'Everyday People' by Sly & the Family Stone.

"I love this song.  It reminds me of 3rd Grade" he said.

Apparently his teacher played it to the class every day and they would all sing along.

I like that he has this song as a great memory of his first six months here at school.  A great message for the children to hear too.

Wishing you a wonderful relaxing weekend.

green day

My handsome boy Luca had crazy hair day at school on Friday.

I quite like the colour on him actually.

I have never had any crazy hair colour, or any hair colour at all actually.  My hair is very dark (with a few grey ones creeping in these days) and I've been asked many times if its my natural colour.  I've never even tried a wash in / wash out colour.  I plan to let the grey ones take over as they inevitably will!

How about you? Have you ever dyed your hair a crazy colour?

let's go fly a kite

Thank you to my super kiddos and wonderful Huzz for a lovely Mother's Day.

Singing, school made cards with all manor of declarations, pressies and then the kind of breakfast that fills you for the whole day!

Then we hit the beach for another day of sunshine and blue skies, and just enough wind to get a kite flying.

the world in a room

So we are still hunting for a new family home here in the US. Who'd have thought that with the housing market at a low that we would still be looking for the right one?  Not me.  Maybe we were being too optimistic?  Maybe we should settle for a home that doesn't tick every box on our list, just most of them?

In the meantime, I'm gathering together all kinds of ideas for when 'the' house comes along.  And I cannot wait to unpack all our stuff again (which has now gone into storage here) and make a great home for our family.

For now, I will keep storing all the ideas and plan rooms in my mind, on my Pinterest boards and in my ideas folder filled with pages torn from magazines.

Starting with Luca's bedroom.....

I'm thinking 'maps'.  A wall covered with a huge world map.  A globe he can spin and plan world adventures.  And possibly a huge chalk board / wall too.

Bedroom world map

(This one will be perfect for helping us all to learn our US states!)

What great ideas do you have for boys bedrooms?

my boy

He loves the beaten up and mauled look!

No child was injured here, just recent make-overs (and not even at Halloween!).

papertastic

Just wanted to tell you about something I found today.

One of my favourite blogs for creative ideas, 'How About Orange', always manages to track down the most fantastic free downloads on blogs and websites - party planning stuff, books marks, packaging, stationery, stickers.  I'm forever downloading stuff for making cards, gifts etc.

Anyhow, today I was looking at How About Orange for a party invitation for Ruby's 2nd birthday, and instead I found the site of Marshall Alexander - Paper Engineer.  This dutch designer creates fantastic one-piece paper toys, that by intricate folding turn into wonderful 3D models.  Most have a retro 70s / 80s feel about them (influenced by videogames, cartoons, toys etc) and nearly all are free to download.

I've downloaded so many this evening, as they will be perfect for keeping my broken boy busy this summer.

And just like that, the summer plans changed

Day 6

One broken arm.

Yep, Luca has his right arm in a plaster cast.

Yesterday he spent the afternoon at a friend's house.  Playing the whole afternoon outdoors.  Practising on their wave boards.  Going to a local burger bar for dinner.  Fun, fun, fun.  And the plan to was stay over the night too.

Then I received a call at 7.30pm.

A game of football, ended with the ball hitting his arm against the goalpost.  Snap.  His friend's mum saw it happen.  His scream was unbelievable.  He couldn't move his arm.  My little boy actually said "I want to be brave and stay here, but it hurts so much.  Can you call my mama."  Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about him now.

An emergency dash in the car and 15 mins later we were home.  He sat in the car holding his arm whilst Huzz hurried out to take a look.  Then I gave them the necessary bits - phone, cash, drinks, hospital card - and they left for the hospital.

He came home one and half hours later after being examined immediately on arrival at the hospital.  His arm is in a blue plaster cast from his fingers to his shoulder.  For 4 weeks!!!   Yes 4 weeks of the summer holidays.  Bang goes the surfing lessons in Cornwall mentioned here.  Bang goes the wave board practice, all the swimming, diving and the cycling he loves.  Bang goes the sport camp durng the last week.  Oh Luca my broken little boy.  I'm so sorry for you.

He didn't want this photo taken (can't you tell ?!)

Any tips for keeping a near 8 year old very active boy happy and busy for the holidays would be gratefully received!

Strawberry shake

Yesterday, I collected Luca from school and we popped straight to the supermarket.  For the first time ever, I gave him the money and he went in by himself to buy a tub of our favourite organic vanilla icecream.  He's been asking for a while if he could do some shopping alone.  Small steps!

The icecream was needed as I really fancied whipping up a lovely creamy strawberry milkshake when we arrived home (after seeing all those deliciously cool drinks I blogged about yesterday).

We popped into the blender a good 25 strawberries.  Half a tub of said icecream.  Some milk.  One teaspoon of vanilla extract.  A few ice-cubes.  And pulsed away.

Delicious. Easy.  And Pretty Pink.

Weekend Lows and Highs

The journey that didn't take place.

We had a couple of lows this weekend.

Ruby and I were supposed to be visiting my mum and sister in Scotland for the weekend.  But ... whilst waiting in the looooong Ryan Air (you get what you pay for - basically nothing!) check-in line at Dusseldorf airport, I looked down at Ruby's bare feet (too hot for shoes) and her little toes and underneath her feet were covered in spots - red with white raised centers.  There were more on her hands.  And so on her knees.  She'd also had a few on her bottom in the daytime which I assumed was a sweat rash.  She was grizzly and not her usual self.

Mum is on her 3rd round of chemo and very fragile and prone to picking up any illness around her.  Sister is 7 months pregnant.  Chicken Pox has been going around here big time and I've avoided friends whose kiddies were sick for the past few weeks.  I so wanted to take Ruby to see mum.  She is a darling and so much fun.  She would really give mum a boost.

I tried calling the friends whose kiddies had recently been infected - no answer from anyone.  I called my sister and explained what I saw.  I jumped out the check-in line and went to the Information desk.  Was there a First Aid desk or person here who could advise?  A man came to see us and spoke entirely in German and the Information Desk lady translated, but he had no clue as to what the spots could be or what Chicken Pox looked like.  I Googled on my iPhone to find out more - the spots did look like Chicken Pox, but I still couldn't be sure - apparently they normally come out first on the body.

What to do, what to do?  Firstly I needed to cool Ruby down and bought an ice-lolly which pleased her no end, but mostly melted on her dress.   I called my sister again.  We agreed that I couldn't risk taking Ruby on the flight.  What if it was Chicken Pox?  I couldn't take her near mum and apparently my sister would need to get a vaccination. We would not be able to fly back until the spots were gone.

We solemnly went back to the car.  Ruby was saying 'On plane, on plane' over and over.  She cried nearly the whole way home (apart from 20 mins nap from exhaustion).

We arrived home, hot, sad and waiting to see if Ruby would be covered by Saturday morning.

That was the 1st low for the weekend.

Then we had a high.  The horrible rash and spots did not spread any further on Ruby.  They looked terrible on her feet, but thankfully that's where they stayed.   We think it may be a reaction to a particular type of caterpillar present in NL at this time of year, that sheds its little hairs all over the grass.  We are still waiting to see our GP today for confirmation.  In the meantime, we are covering her little feet in Calamine Lotion and keeping them cool and away from the grass.

As Ruby and I had planned to be away, and the weather was gorgeous, Huzz and Luca had booked a hotel at the coast for the weekend.  We changed the booking to a family room and joined them.  The cool sea water kept Ruby's little toes happy.  And we all enjoyed a few hours on Saturday afternoon at the beach in Vlissingen and again on Sunday, with dips in the hotel pool in between.  It was hot, but a cool breeze was wonderful after the almost still hot air at home.  Luca had the best time working on his skim boarding and did so well.

Wipe Out!

So, some family time at the beach made up a little for not getting to Scotland.  But my mum was so disappointed.  I'm not trying to fix up a flight for next weekend to go alone and take her out and about a little.

The 2nd low ....   well if you'd been half interested in the football World Cup, you'd know that it was a sad night for Holland.  Huzz and Luca went into the city along with the thousands of others dressed in orange to watch the final on the huge screens and to experience the crazy maybe 'once in a life-time' moment.  They returned at half time.  It was near impossible to move and Luca had to sit on Huzz's shoulders to catch any kind of glimpse of the action.  He so wanted to be part of the crowd, but I think it was just a bit to much for him.  The comfort of the sofa, cold drinks, snacks and a good view won them over.  Sadly, Holland lost 0 - 1 to Spain.  Luca sobbed.  Poor little guy.  We'd talked about how they may not win.  But of course he was so sure his team would hold the trophy high and he'd be running down the street in celebration.  And so, to bed late and very tired today.  My feelings go out to all the teachers today who have a classroom filled with tired disappointed children here in NL.  Its gonna be a tough day.

Hope you had a great weekend.  Here's to a good week.
